NS Stations Retailbedrijf

Investment decisions, station locations

Good management of margins is just as important for railway stations as it is for retail companies. Major stations have been overhauled in recent years, with the addition of many food and drink and other options. These must be well matched to client flow and travellers’ spending patterns. A detailed analysis was needed to estimate the retail outlets’ expected revenue as accurately as possible.

Task description

Created and assessed business cases and investment proposals for the setup of retail outlets in stations. Improved the project monitoring process, from idea to implementation.

Results

  • Project monitoring tool
  • Ad-hoc scenario analyses
  • Approximately ten business case proposals, NS Poort Management

Approach

Functioned as sparring partner on a financial and commercial level. Safeguarded the balance between the complete overview and the details. Continually tested the expectation of turnover potential and the cannibalisation effect of controllers against traveller patterns. Used a financial model to elaborate on the underlying revenue and cost flows. Coordinated cross-departmental business cases, presented proposals and analysis to management and designed and constructed a project monitoring tool.
